Strange Magic (Touchstone Movie)

“Strange Magic” is an animated fantasy musical film released in 2015, directed by Gary Rydstrom and produced by Lucasfilm Animation. The film takes place in a magical fairy kingdom and tells the story of love, friendship, and the power of music.

The story centers around Marianne (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood), a strong-willed and independent fairy princess who has sworn off love after a heartbreaking experience with a would-be suitor. Her younger sister, Dawn (voiced by Meredith Anne Bull), on the other hand, dreams of finding true love and is determined to marry the first handsome fairy that crosses her path.

When the Bog King (voiced by Alan Cumming), ruler of the Dark Forest, kidnaps Dawn, Marianne embarks on a daring rescue mission. However, as she confronts the Bog King, she discovers that he is not the villain he appears to be. The Bog King has his reasons for detesting love and the idea of fairies meddling in his kingdom.

Throughout the film, “Strange Magic” explores the themes of love, acceptance, and the understanding that true love can be found in the most unexpected places. The characters face challenges, learn from their mistakes, and come to appreciate the power of music in bridging differences and bringing people together.

“Strange Magic” features a wide array of popular songs from different decades and genres, adding a unique and vibrant musical element to the storytelling. The soundtrack includes classics like “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Love Is Strange,” and “I Can’t Live (If Living Is Without You),” which are performed by the characters throughout the film.

The animation style of “Strange Magic” is colorful and visually appealing, creating a whimsical and enchanting world filled with magical creatures, fairies, goblins, and other fantastical beings.

While “Strange Magic” received mixed reviews from critics upon its release, the film has garnered a dedicated following and is appreciated for its musical numbers, charming characters, and positive messages about love and acceptance. It remains a touchstone film that families and fans of animated fantasy can enjoy for its heartwarming story, magical setting, and toe-tapping musical performances.
