Who is Red?
Red, also known as “The Red,” is a mysterious and menacing character from A Wrinkle in Time.
This science fiction fantasy film, based on Madeleine L’Engle’s novel, features Red as a representative of the evil force known as “The IT.” The IT is a malevolent being that spreads darkness, fear, and conformity throughout the universe. Red serves as one of its manifestations, appearing during the protagonists’ journey to rescue Meg Murry’s father, Dr. Alex Murry, who has been trapped on the planet Camazotz by The IT.
Red’s most notable scene is when he attempts to manipulate and break down Meg’s brother, Charles Wallace, through psychological intimidation and persuasion. Red’s eerie and unsettling demeanor embodies the corrupting influence of The IT, which uses fear and temptation to control individuals. His character symbolizes the insidious power of evil to lure and dominate the vulnerable.
In the 2018 film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, the character of Red is portrayed by Michael Peña.
