Who is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine?
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine—usually called “the Contessa” or simply “Val” is a long-running Marvel Comics super-spy who plays every side. Created by writer-artist Jim Steranko, she first appeared in Strange Tales #159 (1967) as a chic S.H.I.E.L.D. recruit who became Nick Fury’s ally, love interest, and frequent foil.
Later stories complicated her loyalties: she’s been depicted as a double agent tied to Leviathan and, in some arcs, assuming the mantle of “Madame Hydra,” underscoring her reputation as an elite manipulator.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Valentina is portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She debuted in 2021’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Episode 5), recruited John Walker as U.S. Agent, resurfaced in Black Widow’s post-credits scene, appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as CIA director, and returned in 2025’s Thunderbolts*, where her scheming stretches to team-building on a global stage. An earlier screen version was played by Lisa Rinna in the 1998 TV film Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Across mediums, Val’s hallmark is strategic ambiguity: she cultivates assets, weaponizes secrets, and treats patriotism as a chessboard rather than a creed—sometimes defending order, sometimes undermining it, always playing a longer game.
