Who is Gary De’Snake?
Gary De’Snake is a new central character in Zootopia 2, a sleek, venomous pit viper who becomes the focus of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde’s latest case.
He’s introduced as a mysterious reptile whose sudden appearance in the city is a big deal, because reptiles have been absent from Zootopia for generations. Over the film, Gary emerges not as a one-note villain but as a driven, emotionally complicated tritagonist whose goal is to win back a place for reptiles in the mammal-dominated metropolis and to clear his family’s name. His history ties directly into Zootopia’s founding myths, so what he’s doing forces the city to confront how it treats anyone it has pushed to the margins.
Gary is voiced by Ke Huy Quan, the Academy Award–winning actor known for playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Data in The Goonies, and Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan brings a mix of warmth, nervous humor, and intensity to Gary, giving the snake an unexpectedly gentle, even huggable side while still making him feel dangerous, determined, and deeply hurt by the injustice his family has faced. His scenes with Judy and Nick balance tension and empathy, making Gary one of the most memorable new characters in the sequel.
