Who is Aunt Sponge?
Aunt Sponge is a character from James and the Giant Peach, a children’s novel by Roald Dahl.
She is one of the two cruel aunts who take care of the protagonist, James, after his parents die. Aunt Sponge, along with her sister Aunt Spiker, mistreats James and forces him to do all the household chores. Aunt Sponge is described as fat, greedy, lazy, and selfish, in contrast to Aunt Spiker, who is thin and equally cruel. Both aunts meet their demise when a giant peach grows from a magical tree, crushing them.
In the 1996 James and the Giant Peach film adaptation, Aunt Sponge is played by Miriam Margolyes, who also provides the voice for the Glowworm in the same film.
