Who is Billy Bones?
Billy Bones is a minor yet pivotal character in Disney’s Treasure Planet, a sci-fi adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
In this version, Billy Bones is an old, grizzled alien pirate who crashes at the Benbow Inn, where young Jim Hawkins and his mother live. He is the keeper of the legendary treasure map that leads to the fabled Treasure Planet, and he entrusts the map to Jim just before dying from injuries sustained during an attack by space pirates.
In the story, Billy Bones serves as the catalyst for Jim’s adventure, setting the events of the film into motion by passing on the map, which contains the location of Captain Flint’s vast treasure hoard. His mysterious and dramatic entrance into Jim’s life brings danger and excitement, steering the young protagonist toward a life-changing journey across the galaxy.
Billy Bones is voiced by the legendary actor Patrick McGoohan, known for his roles in The Prisoner and Braveheart.
