Who is DeSoto?
DeSoto is one of the antagonists in Disney’s animated film Oliver & Company, which is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist.
DeSoto is a fierce Doberman Pinscher and one of the two loyal guard dogs of the villain Sykes, alongside his partner-in-crime, Roscoe. The two Dobermans serve as Sykes’ muscle, often intimidating or attacking other characters on his behalf. DeSoto is depicted as aggressive and unkind, reveling in bullying weaker animals, especially when targeting Oliver, the young kitten protagonist.
The character of DeSoto is voiced by actor Carl Weintraub. DeSoto’s interactions with Roscoe (voiced by Taurean Blacque) provide some of the film’s tension and action, as they chase and menace Oliver and his friends. The pair’s role adds to the suspense and stakes, as their intimidating presence serves as a constant reminder of the dangers Oliver faces in the streets.
