Who is Fagin?
Fagin is a prominent character in Disney’s animated film Oliver & Company (1988).
Based on Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist, Disney reimagined Fagin as a kindhearted but down-on-his-luck character trying to survive in New York City. In the film, Fagin is a scruffy, endearing man who cares deeply for his group of stray dogs, whom he treats like family.
Although he is depicted as a petty thief forced into a life of crime to pay off his debts, his warmth and loyalty make him a lovable character. Fagin’s struggle revolves around trying to repay a ruthless loan shark, Sykes, who constantly pressures him for payment.
To gather funds, Fagin resorts to small-time schemes and pickpocketing with the help of his street-smart dogs, including Dodger, who eventually brings home Oliver, a stray kitten.
The voice of Fagin is brought to life by actor Dom DeLuise, who infuses the character with a perfect blend of humor, vulnerability, and sincerity.
