Who is Gamma?
Gamma is one of the dogs in Disney-Pixar’s Up, the animated film that follows the adventure of Carl Fredricksen, a widower who travels to South America in his flying house, accompanied by a young boy scout named Russell.
Gamma serves as one of the loyal but somewhat dim-witted members of a pack of dogs led by Alpha, the top dog under the command of Charles Muntz, the film’s main antagonist. Charles Muntz, a famous explorer, has been hiding in the South American wilderness for years, using a specially designed collar to communicate with his dog pack. The collar enables Gamma, along with the other dogs, to “speak” in human language, allowing them to communicate their thoughts, often in humorous and revealing ways.
Gamma is notable for his tough demeanor, often acting aggressively towards others despite his underlying simple nature. He assists Alpha and Beta, other members of the dog pack, in carrying out Muntz’s orders to capture Carl and Russell. His personality combines a mix of loyalty and clumsiness, creating comic relief as he, along with the other dogs, struggles to obey Alpha’s commands.
Gamma is voiced by Jerome Ranft, a Pixar sculptor and artist who occasionally lends his voice to minor characters in Pixar films.
