Who is Madam Mim?
Madam Mim, also known as Mad Madam Mim, is a colorful and eccentric character from Disney’s animated film The Sword in the Stone (1963), based on T.H. White’s novel of the same name.
A mischievous and powerful witch, she serves as a rival to Merlin, the legendary wizard who mentors the young King Arthur, known as Wart. Mim revels in chaos and mischief, delighting in using her magical abilities to transform herself and manipulate her surroundings. She is best known for her theatrical “Wizard’s Duel” with Merlin, a sequence filled with humorous and creative transformations as they battle one another using their magical prowess.
Mim’s character embodies a darker, more malevolent side of magic compared to Merlin’s wisdom and restraint. Despite her comical demeanor, she is portrayed as cunning and competitive, especially during the duel, where her disdain for rules and honor becomes evident. Her downfall comes from underestimating Merlin’s cleverness when he transforms into a germ to defeat her.
The character of Madam Mim was voiced by Martha Wentworth, a talented voice actress who also provided the voice for other Disney characters, such as Nanny and the Cow in 101 Dalmatians (1961).
