Who is Mrs. Clonkers?
Mrs. Clonkers is a minor character in The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant), a classic children’s story by Roald Dahl that has been adapted into various media, including a 1989 animated film and a 2016 live-action film directed by Steven Spielberg.
Mrs. Clonkers is introduced as the cruel and abusive head of the orphanage where Sophie, the protagonist, lives. She is portrayed as heartless and uncaring, creating a harsh environment that contributes to Sophie’s feelings of loneliness and longing for escape. Her neglect and mistreatment of the children starkly contrast with Sophie’s eventual discovery of kindness and adventure in her journey with the BFG.
In the 1989 animated adaptation, Mrs. Clonkers does not appear as prominently, as the story focuses more on Sophie and the BFG’s friendship. However, in the 2016 live-action film, the character was played by Marilyn Norry, a Canadian actress known for her roles in film and television. Norry’s performance captures Mrs. Clonkers’ cold demeanor, adding depth to Sophie’s desire to leave the orphanage behind.
