Who is Mrs Whatsit?

Mrs. Whatsit is a pivotal character from Madeleine L’Engle’s classic science fiction novel A Wrinkle in Time, first published in 1962. She is one of three celestial beings, alongside Mrs. Which and Mrs. Who, who guide and assist the protagonist, Meg Murry, and her companions on their journey to rescue Meg’s father and defeat the malevolent force known as the Black Thing. Mrs. Whatsit is the most approachable and human-like of the three, often appearing whimsical and slightly scatterbrained, but her true nature is far more profound. She is revealed to be a star that sacrificed herself in a battle against the Black Thing, embodying themes of courage and selflessness.

In the 2018 film adaptation directed by Ava DuVernay, Mrs. Whatsit was portrayed by Reese Witherspoon.
