Who is Ned Land?
Ned Land is one of the primary characters in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a classic adventure novel by Jules Verne.
Ned is a skilled and courageous Canadian harpooner who is brought aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln for a mission to hunt down a mysterious sea creature. This “creature” turns out to be the Nautilus, a futuristic submarine commanded by the enigmatic Captain Nemo. Along with Professor Aronnax and his servant Conseil, Ned becomes an unwilling passenger on the Nautilus, embarking on an extraordinary journey beneath the waves.
Unlike the intellectual and curious Aronnax, Ned is grounded and pragmatic. He constantly dreams of freedom and resents their captivity aboard the submarine, making multiple attempts to escape. His determination, physical strength, and resourcefulness make him a valuable ally in dangerous situations, but his impulsiveness often puts him at odds with the more contemplative Aronnax and the enigmatic Nemo. Ned serves as the novel’s everyman, a relatable foil to the lofty ambitions and philosophies of the other characters.
In Disney’s 1954 film adaptation, Ned Land is portrayed by Kirk Douglas, who brings a roguish charm and humor to the role. Douglas’s energetic performance, including the iconic musical number “A Whale of a Tale,” made Ned one of the most memorable characters in the film.
