Who is Norrington?

Norrington, formally known as James Norrington, is a significant character in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Portrayed by British actor Jack Davenport, Norrington is introduced as a determined and ambitious officer in the Royal Navy. Initially, he is an antagonist to Captain Jack Sparrow, pursuing him as a notorious pirate, and is also a rival for the affections of Elizabeth Swann, the series’ leading lady.

In The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Norrington is characterized by his strong sense of duty, propriety, and law, embodying the British naval ideal. However, his unyielding adherence to rules often blinds him to nuances of morality and personal relationships, leading to strained dynamics with Elizabeth and an adversarial stance against Jack Sparrow.

Norrington’s arc takes a darker turn in Dead Man’s Chest (2006) after he resigns from the Navy in disgrace due to Sparrow’s escape. Stripped of his honor, he becomes embittered, aligning temporarily with villainous forces like Lord Cutler Beckett to reclaim his standing. His redemption is explored in At World’s End (2007), where he sacrifices his life to save Elizabeth, demonstrating a return to his noble core.
