Who is Sir Ector?
Sir Ector is a character from Disney’s animated film The Sword in the Stone (1963), an adaptation of T.H. White’s novel of the same name.
In the story, Sir Ector is the foster father of Arthur, affectionately called “Wart,” who is destined to become King of England. Ector is a gruff but ultimately good-hearted medieval lord who manages a modest estate and strives to raise Wart alongside his biological son, Kay. While he is not particularly wise or heroic, Sir Ector has a sense of fairness and responsibility, though his grumpy demeanor and impatience often overshadow these qualities.
Ector is skeptical of the wizard Merlin, whom Wart befriends early in the film, and he is prone to dismissing magical or fantastical explanations for events. He is also devoted to training Kay as a knight, preparing him for a jousting tournament in London, which ultimately leads to Wart’s discovery of the fateful sword in the stone.
In the animated film, Sir Ector was voiced by actor Sebastian Cabot. Cabot, known for his rich, distinguished voice, brought a mix of authority and humor to the character, ensuring that Sir Ector was both memorable and distinct in Disney’s charming retelling of Arthurian legend.
