Who is Sophie?
Sophie is the central human character in The BFG (short for The Big Friendly Giant), a beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl, which was later adapted into a feature film.
Sophie is an orphaned girl living in a dreary orphanage who encounters the Big Friendly Giant, a kindhearted, dream-catching giant who whisks her away to his fantastical world. Unlike the other intimidating and man-eating giants, the BFG is gentle and compassionate, forming a unique bond with Sophie. Together, they embark on an adventure to stop the other giants from eating human children, enlisting the help of the Queen of England to save the day.
In Steven Spielberg’s 2016 film adaptation of The BFG, Sophie is portrayed by British actress Ruby Barnhill. Just 12 years old at the time of filming, Ruby brought the character to life with a combination of bravery, charm, and wit, capturing Sophie’s inquisitive and determined nature.
