Who is Sykes?
Sykes is the primary antagonist in Disney’s Oliver & Company (1988), a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist set in New York City.
Sykes is a cold, calculating, and ruthless loan shark who operates in the criminal underworld. His menacing personality and sinister demeanor are accentuated by his luxurious yet shadowy lifestyle, often seen conducting business in his black stretch limousine. Sykes exhibits a terrifying aura, ruling over those indebted to him with intimidation and threats, making him a formidable presence in the story.
In the film, Sykes is connected to Fagin, another key character, who owes him a significant debt. As the deadline for repayment looms, Sykes becomes increasingly aggressive, leading to a dramatic series of events that propel the story forward. Sykes also has two ferocious Doberman Pinschers, Roscoe and DeSoto, who act as his loyal enforcers.
The character of Sykes is brought to life by actor Robert Loggia, whose deep, gravelly voice adds an extra layer of menace and authority.
