Who is Thimblerig?

Thimblerig is a minor character in Disney’s “Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier,” a film released in 1955. This movie was inspired by the real-life American frontiersman and folk hero, Davy Crockett, and starred Fess Parker in the titular role.

Thimblerig is not a historical figure but rather a fictional character created for the film. He is a member of Crockett’s group of adventurers and is portrayed as a friendly and somewhat comical character. Thimblerig is often seen participating in card games and other activities with his fellow frontiersmen.

The character’s name, “Thimblerig,” is derived from the name of a classic street game also known as the shell game or three-card monte, where a small ball or object is hidden under one of three cups or thimbles, and participants must guess which one it is under after the cups are shuffled around. This may be a nod to the character’s playful and somewhat mischievous nature.

While Thimblerig, played by Hans Conried, is not a central character in the film, he adds to the camaraderie and adventurous spirit of Davy Crockett’s group as they journey through the frontier. The film “Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier” is known for its portrayal of American frontier life and the heroism of Davy Crockett during the 19th century.
