Who is Tom?

In Up! (2009), Tom is a minor character who appears briefly in the movie’s opening sequences.

He’s a construction worker on the development team attempting to buy Carl Fredricksen’s house so they can demolish it and complete a new urban project. Tom’s character, along with his team, represents the encroachment of modern development on Carl’s cherished home, which he views as a sanctuary filled with memories of his late wife, Ellie.

When Tom and his team approach Carl with an offer to buy his home, Carl firmly rejects it, emphasizing his desire to preserve the legacy and memories his home holds. Tom’s persistence is symbolic of the societal pressures Carl faces as he tries to hold onto his past in a world that’s rapidly moving forward. The tension with Tom’s character eventually leads to a turning point when Carl decides to embark on his adventure to South America to fulfill Ellie’s dream.

In the English version of Up!, Tom is voiced by John Ratzenberger, a frequent voice actor for Pixar films who is known for providing the voice of characters in every Pixar feature up until that point. His roles include Hamm in Toy Story, the Abominable Snowman in Monsters, Inc., and Mack in Cars.
