Overview
Club Penguin was a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) where players could create and control penguin avatars in a virtual world. The game was designed primarily for children and included various activities, mini-games, and social interactions in a safe online environment.
Acquisition by Disney:
In August 2007, Disney acquired Club Penguin and its parent company, New Horizon Interactive, for approximately $350 million. Disney’s acquisition aimed to leverage Club Penguin’s growing popularity and integrate it into Disney’s broader digital and entertainment portfolio.
Shutdown:
Club Penguin was officially shut down on March 30, 2017. Disney replaced it with a new mobile game called “Club Penguin Island,” which itself was discontinued on December 20, 2018. The shutdown of the original Club Penguin marked the end of an era for many of its fans, who had enjoyed the game for over a decade.
