Who is Ava Starr / Ghost?
Ava Starr, also known as Ghost, is a complex and intriguing character in the Marvel Comics universe, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). She first appeared in the MCU film “Ant-Man and The Wasp” (2018), portrayed by actress Hannah John-Kamen.
In the MCU, Ava Starr’s story is one of tragedy and desperation. As a young girl, she was involved in a tragic accident that exposed her to quantum energy, leaving her in a state of constant molecular instability. Her condition allows her to phase through solid objects and become intangible, but it also causes her severe pain and makes her existence extremely unstable.
In the film, Ghost becomes a significant antagonist to Ant-Man (Scott Lang) and the Wasp (Hope van Dyne) due to her desperate search for a cure to her condition. She believes that harnessing Janet van Dyne’s quantum energy can stabilize her molecular state, and she goes to great lengths to obtain it, even if it means endangering others.
Ava Starr’s character is portrayed with depth and sympathy, making her more than just a traditional villain. Her actions stem from her pain and desperation to survive, which adds a layer of complexity to her motives. Despite being an antagonist, audiences can empathize with her struggles and the tragedy that shaped her life.
In the comics, Ghost has a different backstory and persona. The original comic book version of Ghost first appeared in “Iron Man” #219 in 1987. In this incarnation, Ghost is a male industrial saboteur who uses advanced technology to become invisible and intangible, allowing him to infiltrate and disrupt corporate operations. He has a deep-seated hatred for large corporations and their unethical practices, leading him to sabotage their activities and become a thorn in Iron Man’s side.
While the comic book Ghost and the MCU Ghost share similar abilities, their origins and personalities diverge significantly. The film adaptation of Ava Starr brings a fresh and unique take on the character, introducing a compelling and sympathetic antagonist with ties to the quantum realm and the larger MCU narrative.
Ava Starr, aka Ghost, showcases the ability of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reinterpret and reimagine characters from the comics, providing audiences with fresh and engaging storytelling while still capturing the essence of the original source material. Her presence in the MCU adds depth and complexity to the narrative, making her a memorable and significant part of the Marvel movie universe.
