JioCinema Shuts Down as It Merges with Disney+ Hotstar in Major Streaming Overhaul
Published on 10/22/24 by Craig Smith
JioCinema is shutting down as it merges into Disney+ Hotstar, marking a significant shift in India’s streaming landscape. Reliance Industries, which owns JioCinema, is integrating its content with Disney+ Hotstar to create a unified platform.
The merger will see JioCinema’s 225 million monthly users (16 million paid subscribers) combine with Disney+ Hotstar’s 333 million users (35.5 million paid subscribers).
The move comes as part of a broader merger, announced earlier this year, which saw Reliance Industries and Disney agreeing to combine Star and Viacom18.
It is believed that this merger will boost Disney+ Hotstar’s subscriber base, strengthen its content offerings, and help both companies compete more effectively in India’s fiercely competitive streaming market.
