‘X-Men ’97’ Shatters Streaming Records with Impressive Debut
Published on 3/25/24 by Craig Smith
In an electrifying showcase of popularity, ‘X-Men ’97’ has swiftly garnered over 4 million views within just five days of its release, according to Disney. This significant achievement establishes the series as the most successful Season 1 premiere of a full-length animated series on the streaming service since the debut of Marvel’s “What If…?” in 2021.
This places ‘X-Men ’97’ at a higher ranking than other notable series such as “Iwájú” and “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” with the tally not including animated shorts like “Star Wars: Visions,” “I Am Groot,” and “Zootopia+.”
The series is a direct continuation of the iconic “X-Men: The Animated Series,” which aired on Fox Kids from 1992 to 1997, and explores the adventures of the X-Men as they face new challenges in the aftermath of Professor Charles Xavier’s departure. The show features an ensemble cast with Ray Chase voicing Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, and other talented actors bringing to life the beloved characters such as Storm, Wolverine, and Magneto.
Beau DeMayo heads the writing team for ‘X-Men ’97,’ with direction by Jake Castorena, Chase Conley, and Emi Yonemura. The series boasts an impressive executive production team including Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, and Victoria Alonso, among others.
Critics and fans alike have praised the series, which currently holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s Alison Herman commends the show for its commitment to honoring the legacy of its predecessor while engaging a new generation of viewers. Herman highlights the series’ ability to balance a respect for the original’s fantastical elements with a modern take on character development and emotional depth.
‘X-Men ’97’ not only revives cherished memories for long-time fans but also introduces the X-Men’s rich narrative and dynamic characters to a new audience, promising a blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling.
