Series Description:
“Far from the Tree” is a 2021 animated short film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Directed by Natalie Nourigat, the film explores the complexities of parenting through the experiences of a raccoon family. Set against the backdrop of a Pacific Northwest beach, the narrative follows a young raccoon whose curiosity leads it into precarious situations, prompting its parent to enforce strict protective measures. As the young raccoon matures and becomes a parent itself, it confronts similar challenges, reflecting on the balance between safeguarding and allowing exploration.
The animation uniquely blends 2D and CG techniques, drawing inspiration from the natural behaviors of raccoons to strike a balance between anthropomorphism and realism. The film’s watercolor aesthetic is influenced by the works of comic book artist Manu Arenas, enhancing its visual appeal. Premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 15, 2021, “Far from the Tree” was later released alongside Disney’s feature film “Encanto” on November 24, 2021. It became available for streaming on Disney+ on December 24, 2021.
