Series Description:
Disney’s Marsupilami is a 1993 animated television series that brought the whimsical Belgian comic character to American audiences. Originally introduced in the 1992 anthology show Raw Toonage, Marsupilami received his own half-hour program on CBS, featuring a blend of jungle antics and slapstick humor.
The titular character, Marsupilami, is a lively, yellow, spotted creature with an extraordinarily long, prehensile tail. Unlike his comic counterpart, who primarily communicated through the exclamation “Houba!”, Disney’s version speaks fluent English, adding a new dimension to his character. He shares his adventures with a colorful cast: Maurice, a gentle purple gorilla; Stewart, a somewhat uptight elephant; Eduardo, a cunning jaguar; and Norman, a persistent human poacher.
Each episode typically comprised three segments: two featuring Marsupilami and one spotlighting other characters like Sebastian the crab from The Little Mermaid or the duo Shnookums and Meat. Despite its creative premise and talented voice cast—including Steve Mackall, Jim Cummings, and Dan Castellaneta—the series concluded after a single season of 13 episodes. While it enjoyed reruns on the Disney Channel and Toon Disney, Marsupilami remains a nostalgic gem for fans of early ’90s animation.
