Renegade Nell

“Renegade Nell” is a British historical fantasy series that premiered on Disney+ on March 29, 2024. Created by BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright, the show blends action, adventure, and supernatural elements within an 18th-century English setting.

The narrative centers on Nell Jackson, portrayed by Louisa Harland, a quick-witted young woman who becomes the most notorious outlaw in England after being framed for murder. Her journey takes an unexpected turn with the appearance of Billy Blind, a magical sprite who reveals that Nell’s destiny is far greater than she ever imagined.

The ensemble cast includes Adrian Lester as the enigmatic Earl of Poynton, Nick Mohammed as the mystical Billy Blind, and Joely Richardson as Lady Eularia Moggerhanger, a powerful newspaper magnate. The series received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising Harland’s performance. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian described Harland as “beyond brilliant,” and Anita Singh of The Daily Telegraph noted that “Harland carries the whole series and is sensational.”

Despite its unique blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling, “Renegade Nell” was canceled after one season in July 2024. A Disney+ spokesperson stated, “We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor. We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast—led by Louisa Harland—and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.”
