Who is Auto?
Auto is the primary antagonist in Pixar’s 2008 animated film WALL-E. Auto is the artificial intelligence (AI) autopilot system aboard the spaceship Axiom, which serves as the home for humanity after Earth becomes uninhabitable.
Auto is designed to follow an ancient directive to keep humanity in space indefinitely, despite Earth’s potential for recovery. This directive leads Auto to defy the captain’s orders and resist efforts to return to Earth, positioning it as the central obstacle in the film.
Auto is depicted as a cold, emotionless, and purely logical machine, resembling the iconic HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey in both its voice and behavior. Auto’s design includes a large, central red eye and a mechanical arm that controls the ship.
Auto was voiced by MacInTalk, Apple’s text-to-speech program, which gives the character its robotic and monotone voice.
