Who is Banzai?

Banzai is one of the three main hyenas in Disney’s animated classic The Lion King.

Alongside Shenzi and Ed, Banzai serves as a comedic yet menacing character who is loyal to Scar, the film’s primary antagonist. Banzai is known for his rough, street-smart personality, and he often displays a sarcastic sense of humor. While he’s part of the trio’s scheming ways, Banzai is also shown to be impatient and prone to frustration, especially with Ed’s antics or when things don’t go as planned.

Banzai’s primary role in The Lion King is to help Scar execute his plan to overthrow Mufasa and take over the Pride Lands. Along with Shenzi and Ed, he assists Scar by causing the stampede that leads to Mufasa’s death, and later, they serve as enforcers during Scar’s reign.

In the original 1994 The Lion King film, Banzai was voiced by actor Cheech Marin, known for his comedic work as part of the Cheech and Chong duo. Marin’s distinctive voice added a witty and humorous dimension to Banzai, making him one of the more memorable characters in the movie.
