Who is Chief?
Chief is a supporting character in Disney’s animated film The Fox and the Hound (1981). He is a grizzled, experienced hunting dog owned by Amos Slade, a hunter, and is initially portrayed as a mentor figure to Copper, a young hound.
Chief is a bloodhound known for his rugged, somewhat grumpy personality, and he takes pride in his role as a seasoned hunting dog. Despite his rough exterior, Chief shows moments of care and loyalty, especially in his relationship with Copper.
Chief’s role in The Fox and the Hound adds depth to the story, as his influence on Copper creates tension between Copper’s friendship with Tod, a fox raised in the wild. When Chief is injured during a pursuit of Tod, it leads Copper to feel an even stronger sense of loyalty to his hunting duty, intensifying the conflict between the two friends.
In the film, Chief is voiced by Pat Buttram, a character actor known for his distinctive, twangy voice. Buttram’s voice work brought a unique charm to Chief, making him memorable as one of Disney’s classic animal characters. Pat Buttram was also known for his roles in other Disney films, including as Napoleon in The Aristocats and as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood.
