Who is Edgar Balthazar the Butler?
Edgar Balthazar, the butler in Disney’s The Aristocats (1970), serves as the primary antagonist in the film. He works loyally for Madame Adelaide Bonfamille, a wealthy retired opera singer, who owns a beloved group of cats.
Edgar initially appears as a dedicated servant; however, his character reveals darker intentions when he learns that Madame plans to leave her fortune to her cats instead of him. Fearing that he will never see the inheritance he believes he deserves, Edgar devises a plot to get rid of Duchess, the family’s pampered cat, and her three kittens—Marie, Toulouse, and Berlioz—hoping that without them, he will inherit the wealth.
Edgar’s scheme involves kidnapping the cats and abandoning them in the countryside, hoping to eliminate them as obstacles. However, his plans are continuously thwarted as the cats attempt to make their way back to Paris. His character balances humor and villainy; his bumbling personality and frequent blunders add comic relief to his villainous role, making him both a memorable and laughable adversary.
Roddy Maude-Roxby, a British actor, lent his voice to Edgar Balthazar. Maude-Roxby’s performance captures Edgar’s sly ambition while adding a touch of lightheartedness to the character, fitting the playful yet scheming butler’s persona.
