Who is Evinrude?
Evinrude is a beloved character from Disney’s 1977 animated film The Rescuers.
As a dragonfly with a strong, determined personality, Evinrude serves as a key helper for the main characters, Bernard and Miss Bianca, as they embark on a rescue mission. Evinrude’s role is to help the two mice navigate the swampy waters surrounding their journey, propelling a small boat with his incredibly fast wings, which create the propeller-like effect needed to get them across murky waters.
Evinrude doesn’t speak but communicates with enthusiastic buzzing sounds, giving him a unique personality and charm that audiences adore. His loyalty and willingness to help, even when faced with difficult odds and tiring journeys, make him a memorable part of the rescue team. He plays a crucial role in helping the characters escape dangerous situations by moving them swiftly and safely through treacherous swamp areas, often while evading villains or local swamp predators.
The buzzing sound effects that brought Evinrude to life were created by sound designer and veteran Disney effects artist, Jimmy MacDonald. Known for creating unique soundscapes, MacDonald’s work on Evinrude added a layer of liveliness that contributed significantly to the character’s charm and appeal.
