Who is Giddy the Elephant?
Giddy the Elephant is a character from Disney’s Dumbo (1941), one of the most beloved early animated classics. She is part of the “Elephant Matriarchs,” a group of female elephants who, despite being adults, act in an almost cliquish, gossip-prone manner.
These elephants serve as supporting characters, often acting as antagonists toward Dumbo and his mother, Mrs. Jumbo. Giddy, in particular, is one of the most talkative and judgmental of the group, expressing shock and distaste for Dumbo’s large ears and making him a subject of ridicule. Although her role is minor, Giddy is essential in representing the narrow-minded societal views that Dumbo faces, embodying the judgmental attitudes that he ultimately overcomes.
Giddy is voiced by actress Dorothy Scott, whose performance brings a prim and somewhat snooty tone to the character, perfectly aligning with Giddy’s gossipy nature.
