Who is Hera?

In Disney’s Hercules (1997), Hera is the Queen of the Gods and the wife of Zeus. She is also the mother of Hercules, the story’s central character.

In Greek mythology, Hera is known as the goddess of marriage, family, and childbirth, often depicted as a powerful and sometimes stern figure. In Disney’s adaptation, however, Hera’s character is softened, embodying a nurturing and loving mother who adores her son Hercules. This portrayal contrasts with traditional myths, where Hera is not the biological mother of Hercules and, in fact, has a tense relationship with him due to Zeus’s infidelity. Disney’s Hera is supportive and loving, eager to see her son succeed and be happy, adding warmth to her otherwise regal and commanding presence.

In Hercules, the role of Hera was voiced by actress Samantha Eggar. Eggar brought a sense of grace and authority to the character, balancing Hera’s role as a powerful goddess with her softer, motherly qualities.
