Who is Hercules?

Hercules, the titular character in Disney’s Hercules (1997), is the son of the gods Zeus and Hera, born with extraordinary strength and a deep desire to belong.

However, his idyllic life on Mount Olympus is interrupted when Hades, the god of the underworld, plots to overthrow Zeus. Hades fears that Hercules might thwart his plans, so he sends his minions to make Hercules mortal. Though they strip Hercules of his divine immortality, his strength remains intact, and he’s raised as a human on Earth. Unaware of his godly origins, Hercules is seen as a misfit due to his incredible power. Eventually, he learns the truth and embarks on a journey to prove himself a true hero, hoping to reclaim his place on Olympus. Along the way, he faces a series of challenges, befriends the satyr Phil (his trainer), and falls in love with the quick-witted Megara. Through self-sacrifice and bravery, Hercules discovers that true heroism is found in selfless deeds.

In the film, Hercules is voiced by Tate Donovan, who brings a mix of youthful charm and earnestness to the character. Donovan captures Hercules’ journey from awkward young man to genuine hero.
