Who is Hoagy?
In Pete’s Dragon (1977), Hoagy is a comic character who serves as the bumbling sidekick of Dr. Terminus, a traveling quack doctor and con artist.
Together, the pair roams from town to town, selling dubious “medicines” and “miracle cures” to unsuspecting villagers. Unlike the cunning Dr. Terminus, Hoagy is rather simple-minded and easily swayed, often providing comic relief through his clumsy and naïve behavior. Hoagy is not particularly evil; rather, he is misguided and unwittingly loyal to Dr. Terminus, often following his lead without fully understanding the schemes they’re involved in.
The role of Hoagy was brought to life by Red Buttons, an acclaimed comedian and actor known for his extensive work in television, film, and theater. With his comedic timing and expressive mannerisms, Buttons infused Hoagy with a childlike charm that made him more humorous than threatening, creating a character that audiences could laugh at rather than fear. Buttons’s career spanned several decades, earning him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Sayonara (1957).
