Who is John?
In Pixar’s WALL-E (2008), John is one of the human characters aboard the Axiom, a spaceship housing humanity in a distant future.
Voiced by actor John Ratzenberger, John is a friendly and curious character who undergoes a subtle but significant transformation during the film. In the story, humans have become dependent on technology, leading sedentary lives in floating chairs with screens that keep them isolated and unaware of their surroundings. John, like most of the Axiom’s inhabitants, is initially absorbed in this digital existence, disconnected from the physical world and even those around him.
However, John’s journey changes when he has a brief encounter with WALL-E, the film’s protagonist. WALL-E accidentally bumps into John, causing him to fall out of his hover chair and momentarily disconnect from his screen. This event awakens something in John; he begins to see the world around him with fresh eyes and connects with Mary, another human on the Axiom who has had a similar experience with WALL-E. Together, John and Mary discover the joy of real interaction, nature, and the simple pleasures they’ve long missed.
