Who is Juan Ortodoncia?
Juan Ortodoncia is a minor character from Pixar’s Coco, the 2017 animated film about a young boy named Miguel who embarks on a journey in the Land of the Dead. Juan Ortodoncia is one of the many deceased characters that Miguel encounters during his adventure in the afterlife. He is recognized by his humorous skeletal appearance, sporting a set of braces, which is how he earned his surname, “Ortodoncia” (meaning “orthodontics” in Spanish).
While his role in the film is brief, Juan Ortodoncia provides comic relief in one of the scenes where he attempts to cross over to the Land of the Living during the Día de los Muertos holiday, but is humorously rejected because no one in the living world has placed his photo on an ofrenda (a home altar) to remember him. This emphasizes the film’s core theme of remembrance and the importance of family in honoring the memory of loved ones.
