Who is King Eidilleg?
King Eidilleg is a pivotal character in Disney’s 1985 animated film The Black Cauldron, based on the second book of Lloyd Alexander’s The Chronicles of Prydain series. He is the jovial and somewhat eccentric ruler of the Fair Folk, a magical and diminutive race that inhabits the hidden world beneath Prydain.
King Eidilleg plays a crucial role in aiding the protagonist, Taran, and his companions—Princess Eilonwy, Fflewddur Fflam, and Gurgi—in their quest to prevent the evil Horned King from using the Black Cauldron to unleash an undead army.
Eidilleg provides refuge to the group in the Fair Folk’s underground sanctuary and reveals that his people are safeguarding Hen Wen, the oracular pig Taran has been searching for. He also directs the group to the cauldron’s location, significantly advancing their mission.
King Eidilleg is voiced by Arthur Malet, a British actor known for his distinctive voice and memorable roles in other Disney films, such as Mr. Dawes Jr. in Mary Poppins. Malet’s performance brings a blend of humor and wisdom to the character, making King Eidilleg a memorable and endearing figure in Disney’s darker and more adventurous animated classic.
