Who is King of Hearts?
The King of Hearts is a character from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. He serves as a ruler alongside the Queen of Hearts, but his role is much less prominent and significantly less intimidating.
The King is depicted as a timid, mild-mannered figure who contrasts sharply with the Queen’s volatile and tyrannical nature. While the Queen frequently demands executions, shouting her iconic “Off with their heads!” decree, the King quietly pardons many of the accused when she isn’t paying attention. This dynamic positions him as a humorous, almost secondary ruler in their shared monarchy.
In adaptations, the King of Hearts often appears as a comic foil to the Queen, sometimes portrayed as bumbling or ineffectual. He is a central figure during the trial scene near the story’s end, presiding over the nonsensical court proceedings involving the Knave of Hearts, who is accused of stealing tarts.
Numerous actors have brought the King of Hearts to life in various adaptations. Notably, in Disney’s 1951 animated Alice in Wonderland, the King was voiced by Dink Trout, a character actor known for his comedic roles. Other adaptations have cast different performers, tailoring the character to fit the tone of the production.
