Who is Kovu?

Kovu is a central character in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, a direct-to-video sequel to Disney’s The Lion King.

A lion from the Outlands, Kovu was chosen by the villainous Zira, Scar’s devoted follower, to be Scar’s heir and to overthrow Simba as king of the Pride Lands. Kovu is the youngest son of Zira and the adoptive heir of Scar, though he is not biologically related to him. His name means “scar” in Swahili, symbolizing his intended role as Scar’s successor.

Initially introduced as a fierce and loyal follower of Zira’s plan, Kovu undergoes significant character growth after meeting and falling in love with Kiara, Simba’s daughter. Their relationship becomes the story’s central focus, highlighting themes of love, redemption, and unity. Kovu’s transformation from a pawn in Zira’s scheme to a self-determined lion advocating for peace between the Outlanders and the Pride Landers is one of the film’s most compelling arcs.

Kovu is voiced by Jason Marsden, who brings a mix of vulnerability and strength to the character. In his cub years, he is voiced by Ryan O’Donohue.
