Who is Lachesis?

Lachesis is one of the three Fates in Disney’s animated film Hercules (1997), based on figures from Greek mythology.

In mythology, the Fates—Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos—are responsible for controlling the destinies of mortals, measuring the thread of life, and determining its end. In the movie, Lachesis is portrayed as part of this trio, embodying their eerie, comical, and somewhat sinister role. Together, they play a significant part in the story’s development, including foreseeing Hercules’ potential to thwart Hades’ plan to overthrow Zeus.

Lachesis specifically is the Fate who measures the thread of life, signifying the lifespan and destiny of an individual. In the film, she works alongside her sisters, contributing to the Fates’ cryptic and darkly humorous demeanor. Known for their shared single eye, which they pass among themselves to see, the Fates embody a quirky, yet unsettling presence in Hercules.

In Hercules, Lachesis is voiced by actress and comedian Carole Shelley. Shelley was known for her distinctive voice and had a prolific career in film, television, and theater.
