Who is Lafayette the Basset Hound?
Lafayette is a character from Disney’s 1970 animated film The Aristocats. He is a laid-back and slightly dim-witted basset hound who, along with his partner Napoleon (a bloodhound), serves as comic relief in the movie. The two dogs live on a farm in the French countryside and are known for their humorous interactions and bickering.
Lafayette is characterized by his droopy ears, slow demeanor, and deep loyalty to Napoleon, although he often tries to assert himself in their partnership. Despite Napoleon’s claims of being the leader, Lafayette occasionally makes insightful observations, though they are often ignored or overshadowed by Napoleon’s confident bluster.
In The Aristocats, Lafayette and Napoleon encounter Edgar, the butler who is trying to dispose of the aristocratic cats so that he can inherit the fortune meant for them. The dogs get involved when they hear Edgar’s motorcycle and mistake him for a threat, leading to a chaotic and funny sequence where they chase after him and ultimately cause him to crash.
