Who is Lampie?
Lampie is a delightful and quirky character from Disney’s 1977 film Pete’s Dragon. He is the lighthouse keeper in the small, rugged coastal town of Passamaquoddy, where much of the story unfolds.
Lampie is known for his eccentric demeanor, tendency to overindulge in alcohol, and his fervent belief in Pete’s dragon, Elliott. Unlike many of the townsfolk who scoff at the idea of a dragon, Lampie is one of the first to encounter Elliott, albeit under amusing and slightly chaotic circumstances.
Lampie serves as a comic relief character, adding humor to the film with his over-the-top reactions and interactions with other characters. Despite his bumbling nature, Lampie has a warm heart and becomes an important ally to Pete, the orphaned boy who befriends Elliott. His steadfast belief in Elliott plays a key role in helping others see the dragon as a force for good rather than a threat.
The role of Lampie was brought to life by the talented character actor Mickey Rooney. A legendary figure in Hollywood, Rooney’s performance imbues Lampie with charm and an endearing quality, making him a memorable and beloved part of Pete’s Dragon.
