Who is M-O?
M-O (Microbe Obliterator) is a memorable and endearing character from Pixar’s WALL-E (2008). This diminutive yet determined robot is a cleaner unit aboard the Axiom, designed to meticulously scrub any foreign contaminants he encounters. M-O’s unwavering commitment to cleanliness drives much of his character arc, making him a comedic and charming presence in the film.
Introduced when WALL-E brings Earth’s dirt aboard the pristine spaceship, M-O takes it upon himself to pursue and clean every trace of grime WALL-E leaves behind. Despite being a relatively small robot with a singular purpose, M-O demonstrates impressive determination, resourcefulness, and even personality. His quirky and mechanical mannerisms, paired with his growing camaraderie with WALL-E, highlight Pixar’s ability to imbue simple characters with depth and relatability.
M-O’s vocalizations were created by the film’s sound designer, Ben Burtt, who also provided the sounds for WALL-E and other robotic characters. Burtt utilized a combination of mechanical noises and human elements to give M-O his distinct voice.
