Who is Madame Medusa?

Madame Medusa is the primary antagonist in Disney’s animated film The Rescuers (1977).

A flamboyant and ruthless pawnshop owner, she is fixated on obtaining the world’s largest diamond, the Devil’s Eye. Her obsession leads her to exploit a young orphan girl named Penny, whom she forces into dangerous situations to retrieve the gem from a pirate’s cave. Medusa is characterized by her dramatic, erratic behavior and her vanity, often using manipulation and threats to get her way. Despite her eccentric charm, her cruelty and greed make her a memorable Disney villain.

Medusa’s appearance is striking, with fiery red hair, heavy makeup, and a penchant for dramatic clothing. Her unpredictable temper and disdain for others, including her bumbling henchman Mr. Snoops, highlight her selfish nature. She is accompanied by her pet alligators, Brutus and Nero, who serve as her intimidating enforcers.

The character was brought to life by the iconic voice actress Geraldine Page, whose performance imbues Medusa with both humor and menace.
