Alongside his sister Jane, Michael embodies the innocence and curiosity of childhood while dealing with the emotional distance of his work-obsessed father. The children are mischievous but well-meaning, often causing trouble for their nanny, leading to the arrival of Mary Poppins, a magical and enigmatic figure who transforms their lives.

Michael’s character represents the longing for familial connection and the joy of imagination. Through his adventures with Mary Poppins, he experiences extraordinary magical moments, such as flying kites, jumping into chalk paintings, and learning life lessons from characters like Bert the chimney sweep. These experiences help bridge the emotional gap between the Banks children and their father.

In the original 1964 film, Michael Banks is portrayed by actor Matthew Garber, who brought a charming mix of curiosity and mischief to the role. Garber’s performance, paired with Karen Dotrice as Jane, remains iconic. Michael also reappears as an adult in Mary Poppins Returns (2018), portrayed by Ben Whishaw, where he is now a widowed father navigating adulthood.
