Who is Mr. Yama?
Mr. Yama is a minor antagonist in Disney’s Big Hero 6 (2014). He is a burly, intimidating underground bot fighter and the owner of a bot-fighting ring in San Fransokyo.
Yama is known for his aggressive and unethical demeanor, often using his size and reputation to intimidate others. His imposing physical appearance, with a shaved head, tattoos, and a menacing presence, reflects his role as a no-nonsense figure in the illegal bot-fighting world. Yama’s bot, a large and intimidating machine, mirrors his personality—brute strength and intimidation over finesse or strategy.
Yama’s interactions with the protagonist, Hiro Hamada, set the stage for early conflict in the movie. Hiro uses his small yet sophisticated microbot to defeat Yama’s bot in an impressive match of skill versus brawn, angering Yama. This confrontation showcases Hiro’s genius and introduces the underground bot-fighting world as part of the larger San Fransokyo setting.
The character of Yama is voiced by Paul Briggs, who is also a Disney story artist and director. Briggs has contributed to several notable Disney films, including Frozen and Zootopia.
