Who is Nathaniel?

Nathaniel is a supporting character in Disney’s Enchanted (2007), a live-action/animated fantasy film that humorously deconstructs traditional fairy tale tropes. Nathaniel serves as the bumbling yet loyal sidekick to the film’s antagonist, Queen Narissa, in the animated kingdom of Andalasia. Despite being hopelessly devoted to Narissa, Nathaniel is often mistreated and manipulated by her, reflecting the archetype of the henchman who seeks approval from a more powerful figure.

In the story, Nathaniel is tasked with following the film’s protagonist, Giselle, to New York City after she is banished from Andalasia by Queen Narissa. He attempts to thwart Giselle’s journey and prevent her from finding her happily-ever-after with Robert, but his efforts are largely comedic and inept. Over time, Nathaniel undergoes significant character development, realizing Narissa’s manipulations and standing up to her, thus redeeming himself and taking steps toward his own personal growth.

Nathaniel is played by actor Timothy Spall, a British actor known for his versatile roles in films like Harry Potter (as Peter Pettigrew) and Sweeney Todd.
