Who is Nessus?

Nessus is a minor but memorable character from Disney’s animated film Hercules (1997). In Greek mythology, Nessus is a centaur known for his deceitful nature and tragic role in the death of Hercules, but in the Disney film, his character is presented with a more comedic and less sinister tone. In the movie, Nessus is depicted as a hulking, brutish centaur with a deep voice and a penchant for aggression, especially toward women. His primary scene involves an attempt to abduct Megara (“Meg”) after she offers herself as a distraction for him in a deal with Hades. Hercules intervenes and heroically defeats Nessus in a brawl, cementing his role as a budding hero and setting the stage for his relationship with Meg.

Nessus is voiced by Jim Cummings, a prolific voice actor known for his extensive work in animation. Cummings has voiced numerous beloved characters, including Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Darkwing Duck.
