Who is REM-E?
REM-E (Remote Ejectable Mechanic – Earth class) is a minor but memorable character from Disney and Pixar’s WALL-E (2008).
This little robot works aboard the Axiom spaceship and is part of the ship’s automated maintenance team. REM-E’s main responsibility is to ensure the proper functioning and cleanliness of the ship’s operations. It appears to be a janitorial bot equipped with cleaning tools and a single wheel for mobility, giving it a compact and efficient design. REM-E’s dedication to its tasks aligns with the broader themes of the movie, which involve automation and the consequences of neglecting human responsibility.
Although REM-E doesn’t have any spoken dialogue, its personality shines through its expressive reactions and interactions, particularly its encounter with WALL-E. In a humorous sequence, REM-E becomes obsessed with cleaning WALL-E’s trail of dirt, showcasing the robotic efficiency and determination that mirrors the obsessive automation aboard the Axiom. This moment adds a touch of humor while underscoring the contrasts between WALL-E’s unique personality and the other robots’ rigid programming.
REM-E was voiced by Ben Burtt, a legendary sound designer who also provided the iconic voice and sounds for WALL-E himself.
